Kilmar Abrego Garcia appeared in a Tennessee courtroom Friday, hours after he was brought back to the U.S. to face charges of transporting undocumented migrants.

Garcia is charged with conspiracy to transport undocumented immigrants and unlawful transportation for financial gain. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for each person transported, and the indictment unsealed last week charged him with driving a van with nine other people in it.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia is back in the United States. He was wrongly deported to a prison in El Salvador in March when the president invoked the wartime Alien Enemies Act. A grand jury in Tennessee indicted him on charges related to a traffic stop in 2022.
